| The second in losonofono’s Skweee releases comes from Helsinki’s own Spartan Lover. Lover of Spartans (or a lover of Spartan caliber?!), and owner of the two-release-deep label Mesak. Although the aforementioned artist has, in gangsta rap talk, been “Down Since Day One”, with tracks featured on the seminal Museum of Future Sound and Skweee Tooth comps on Flogsta Danshall and Ramp recordings respectively, and has prepared remixes for the other two strong suits in the sound, Dodpop and Harmonia, This release symbolizes his first release all to himself.
…and one thing is for certain: When it comes to being a Spartan, he is more enamored with the helmets and muscles than what could be a simile for austere simplicity, which is the last thing you could call either “Eye Drop” or Silk Smooth Skin”. While definitely of the hard to categorize stripe, other than to call it “Funky” in much the same way as a lot of the genre, each seems to possess a hint of the sounds in the parallel universe where Mr. Oizo kept with the hip hop breaks after “Analog Worms…” rather than switching to his more electro persona. Each is a funky builder of bass and drums, of a variety almost too abstract, but somehow all the bits play together to make for some funky business indeed. |

| Clubroot’s first ever 12-inch release is a limited-press three-track EP comprising ‘Solar Flares’, ‘Chamber’ and ‘Remember Me’, tunes which first appeared on the bonus disc of the now-sold-out deluxe CD version of ‘II – MMX’.
Always intended as a separate entity from the carefully paced and structured album, this EP stands alone as another bright beacon along the path set by Clubroot, although owners of the LP edition of ‘II – MMX’ will be pleased to note that the slightly-oversized vinyl jacket was made to neatly house this supplemental release.
And thus, the circle is complete. |

| 2XLP (8 track program) With CD included.
There are distinct and catalytic events and occurrences in all of our lives, and when thinking of these events in retrospect, unusually vivid mental pictures sometimes remain. In relation, when recanting an event in one’s life to a close friend, the who, what, why and how also tends to contain impressions and feelings emoted from films seen, music heard, and other aspects of life, art or otherwise, witnessed and appreciated within that space of subjectivity. For many, the summer of 2009 will carry a soundtrack of Clubroot along with the stories of their life, and when they mentally mark said period, will always conjure up along with it the music of the grey album, released in June, with the fog enveloped tree on the cover.
For the artist in question, one could state a similar passage, although in this particular instance, these events and occurrences have comingled into a catalyst for a new series of beautiful objects of sound to be emitted. The moment the elements of the debut release where sealed and disseminated in their complete form, our artist set out on a new path. In the process, moments of life involving visits to such disparate locales as Türkiye and Polska occurred, and in ways one can only guess upon, became parts of the Cinematic ambiance that is the new Clubroot album, S/T (II – MMX).
In doing so, our artist has created a series of images, distilled to a previously unheard level of refinement within the genre, and with a nature and overall shape and scope that largely transcends any genre one could attempt to subscribe it to. It is still electronic music, yet it all sounds so absolutely married to its accompanying elements that it seems as if it was unearthed in complete form as opposed to constructed. In specific, it possesses some of the most pronounced and arresting basslines ever heard, yet delivered musically in a language that while not the same as the likes of Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, or perhaps Muslimgauze, if, say, these speakers of their particular language where to encounter his at chance alone amongst the desert, in the midst of a desolate voyage, and they attempted to communicate, each would not fully recognize the dialect, yet certain phrases, words, and styles of verbal delivery could be grasped. |

The earth has curved on its axis once again, harkening the gradual inverse in environmental attributes which become embedded in the sights and sounds of each period of our shared human experience. Near the beginning of this last cycle, the world was introduced to the element known as Clubroot. Like so many things natural, and true in their feeling and intent, the CD release was immediately lauded, and gradually the comparisons moved away from that of ties to contemporaries to that of Its inherit traits and beauty.
To say simply that it has become a cultural phenomenon is falling short somehow. It has been put on the highest peak with regards to icons of electronic music, by individuals and organizations as diverse as that of Aquarius Records in San Francisco (who even had Fenriz of Darkthrone speak its praise in their review of the album) to a glowing review on the Pitchfork website, and the ongoing support of Mary Anne Hobbs, who really started the ball rolling in the first place, with her showcase of his music back in the Spring on her BBC Radio 1 Programme.
As awareness of the release spread via these sources, the endless reviews from all around the world, and via word of mouth, one question seemed to come up, over and over: when will there be a vinyl release? It was as if this piece of sound had become such a part of many people’s soul, that they fervently needed an artifact of the recording, in its most physical form.
And with that, LoDubs presents the first album by Clubroot, in a form to be known as The Directors Cut. In contemplating the vinyl release of this material, in a form known both for a different style of listening, and its utilitarian purposes, many, many discussions occurred. The end result was the works contained on these two 12”s, which simultaneously bare all the traits and characteristics of the originals, but are in addition far more taut, with the structural framework far more exposed. Much like an individual who has changed their lifestyle drastically for the better, the person you know is easily recognizable, but somehow, all the minute changes to their being make for drastically pronounced differences.
In short though, without being so wordy, this is Clubroot, designed for the dancehall.

| NOW AVAILABLE. We are in the midst of a great change, both of our world, and the way we live in it. As with the seasons, these shifts are gradual, but little by little they become part of the present. The dubstep and bass sound continues to experience a parallel state of flux : of this evolution, the forms are many, and widely expressive, but none of the many new voices and styles are quite like Clubroot. A St. Alban's resident, Clubroot cut his teeth in the early part of this decade with material bearing a likeness to the futurist ideals of drum and bass producers like Optical, Ed Rush, and Nico. As dubstep began to develop its own musical language, its emerging low end sonic tropes and freedom from rhythmic clutter acted as the catalyst for Clubroot, the moment when he realized what was upon him and was instinctually galvanized into action. His epic debut album is unlike any other yet released in the wider context of dubstep, eschewing high impact rhythmic constructions and muscular bass dynamics in favour of rolling grandeur and elaborately-realised emotive scenes, as thematically profound and vast in conception as it is uniquely expressive. 140 bpm tempos and lurching club-tooled sequences are not part of the Clubroot modus operandum : instead we encounter massive bass vistas, intricate garage-influenced spiralling beats, evocative melodic narratives that unwind to reveal fascinating bright flowers and surges of liquid colour, and a sense of stately beauty rarely encountered in electronic music. Like a map of an undiscovered audio landscape, these 10 tracks illustrate a collection of distinct environments which collectively create a whole set of shared senses, their seemingly otherworldly qualities primed to generate vivid emotional responses to be deeply embedded in the memory. Clubroot’s irresistable siren pull is already winning over fans among the few who have already been exposed to his expansive gathering clouds of sound. Mary Anne Hobbs was quick to commission a mix for her world-renowned Radio 1 show, and will include Clubroot on her next Planet Mu compilation. Meanwhile, word spreading like a looming thunderstorm across the forums and blogs has generated huge anticipation among forward-thinking bass music fans, clamouring for the release of this view into the future. |

| LoDubs is pleased to present Starkbass, A DJ mix by Philadelphia's foremost native son Starkey, known throughout the world as the undisputed king of the Dubstep/Club/Grime/Hip Hop/Wonky/Bassline hybrid sometimes referred to as Streetbass. Although largely composed of the first aforementioned genre, this 25 track DJ mix, comprised of almost completely unreleased material, shows how just how the genius from the east can relentlessly tie all these elements together in a mix, with an air that sounds as if they where all part of some larger style all its own. If you have witnessed and thus heard his phenomenom in person, you will know all too well what we are referring to, and therefore must have been lucky enough to catch one of his dozens of much discussed live sessions in recent history, on one of 5 of the 8 continents (he couldn't get a booking in Antarctica for some reason.............). Starkbass, as an album, captures this essence precisely.
In the process of jumping around the globe with an arsenal of beastly tunes of his own creation, and the experience of being one of a select few to be featured on Mary Anne Hobb's “Generation Bass” program late last year, Starkey has developed a keen ear for hotness from both established artists and the newest/latest producers, allowing him access to the absolute freshest tunes, which is apparent in who is featured on the mix. From artists like Raffertie, who is just about to blow up large, with releases on Slit Jockey and Planet Mu, to established artists like Zomby, Joker, Geeneus, DZ, and Cardopusher, all came forward with their prime goods, and many with their exclusive bits they saved for just such a mega occasion.
Throughout this 25 track mix, covering the entirety of a compact disc, it is clear that the hugely recieved full length Ephemeral Exibits released a few months back was far from a single lightning strike, and Starkbass is the step beyond, showing all the styles that make up the universe of Starkbass. Are you ready?

| Lo Dubs is pleased to present Analog Clash, our first Compact Disc, mixed by LA’s 6Blocc, and destined to become the Rosetta stone of the Dubstep sound emanating from all regions of the Americas.
From Toronto by way of DZ, Bombaman, XI, and the Doom metal group Nadja (Remixed by Vex’d, an exclusive to this release), to Venezuela via Pachecko and Cardopusher, and back to the middle with Philadelphia’s own Starkey and the mighty South3rn of Texas, all the earth encompassing the two continents is represented in a release that may very well be the first of its kind to represent the movement on this side of the pond.
As a mix, 6Blocc has demonstrated once again his ability to thrill, compiling a hour-plus recording that weaves through Lo Dubs diverse list of releases, in addition to a host of unheard recordings, many of which will be featured on 12”s in their own right in the months following the CD release, thus continuing the cross pollination process.
As a bonus, included is a second disc, containing every Lo Dubs release to date, in full CD audio format, mastered to perfection. As Lo Dubs STRONGLY APPOSES digital distribution (hence “Analog Clash”), this will be THE ONLY WAY any Lo Dubs releases will be available in such a high quality digital format, a point which will be made clear in all aspects of promoting this release.

| DZ (Ottawa based producer Sean Harten) seems to be graudually checking off a classic release each within all spectrums of this sound popularly known as Dubstep. From Ear grabbing, head bobbing wobblers via 2007’s Slums Dub (released by Hot Flush) to Jumpin, hip hop infused numbers like Leviathan on Black Acre, and the soon to be released collaboration with XI entitled Guns At Dawn on Lo Dubs, not much territory in the canon of styles remains untouched by a truly evocative tune from the man in discussion. To that list, we add Chalice, DZ’s contribution to the tradition Reggaeside of the movement.
It is a not so widely known fact that much like New York City, many cities in eastern Canada have long been home to individuals with roots in the West Indies, with the famed keyboard player of Studio One, Jackie Mittoo even setting up shop in Toronto in the 70’s. Chalice was built with a heavy emphasis on this heritage, both through its soundsystem themed chord progression, and its inclusion of vocal talent plucked from amongst that culture, courtesy of the one known only as Awaken Lion. A feature, and frequently reloaded peak point track within the circles of the club night Various in Portland and practically every night on Streamizm radio will finally see the light, and we expect the reaction will be exponential to what has already been witnessed via each aforementioned events respective rinseout.
As for the B side, That Bongo Dub feels as if a culture a world away worked with the aim of a tune akin to Chalice, but via vastly different elements ultimately created a different beast all together. However, of the two things that make this piece distinctively DZ (the other being it’s immediately catchy, hook laden bassline) one would be it’s subtle, yet driving way of infusing small and unobtrusive rhythms akin to Drum and Bass and 4 beat musics, just a little at a time, to create something that is incredibly driving, yet still Dubstep to it’s core. This is among our favorite things ever from DZ (Although, in all honesty, even that list is long). PLEASE INDICATE IN THE "NOTES SECTION IF YOU WOULD LIKE A 320kb MP3 E MAILED TO YOU WITH YOUR ORDER. |

| This record is HAUNTED. Not really in that poltergeist way though. More in the Harbinger of Doom way, at least as far a record labels go. From what we have been informed, two different record labels have penciled it in for release, and both, due to a variety of reasons all their own, have ceased to exist. We here at Lo Dubs are not afraid of ghosts though, and even if the earth does swallow us up for releasing Fully Loaded, it would be a fitting end. Going out like someone in the 27 Club or something.
Ultimately, "Fully Loaded" could be described as a bit spooky, but in that upsetter vs. the vampire way, with its reverb drenched, echo heavy skank. We were actually looking at these tracks before the ones that ended up being the first South3rn record on Lo Dubs, the much touted Mangione Tribe Dub, But as stated before, the ultimate outcome was far from clear at that point. The two releases almost seem like a tome now, as fully loaded is about as epic as roots centric dubstep may ever get. Add to that the B Side, entitled "Muslim Dub," which is pure spring steppiness, with a lush, clean amplified riffing and lyrical toasting that evoke the feel of a soundclash dub, circa 2047.
PLEASE INDICATE IN THE "NOTES SECTION OF YOUR ORDER IF YOU WOULD LIKE A 320kb MP3 SENT TO YOU WITH YOUR ORDER. |

| The fifth in Anthem Records ongoing series of ultra limited 7”s (soon to include submissions from Birchville Cat Motel and Nadja) Heads off in a sonic direction not yet touched on in regards to genre, yet certainly akin to the others in the series as a artifact of Drone within the sonic circles of Dub music. A three way sound clash of sorts, “DUBwise” brings together the efforts of Alter Echo (of DJ Spooky’s Dubtometry series, BSI Records, and soon to be widely known as a key exponent behind the long awaited full length from The Lifesavas) ERS-1 (AKA DJ Magneto, a heavy touring DJ and founding member of Innernational along with DJ Day and Rip One) and the unmistakable Dr Israel, who is now 3 full lengths deep on the labels ROIR and Baboon. Here Dr. Israel provides a touch of lyrical toasting, which coupled with the rhythm’s spatial resonance creates a feel of that of an excerpt from a sound clash tape, circa 2047. One might say there are nods to Rhythm & Sound or perhaps Mapstation, although “DUBwise” speaks volumes in it’s own originality to the possibilities awaiting listeners of these artists in the future. “DUBwise”, as with the other records in the series, is a limited edition of 215 hand numbered pieces, and comes in an embossed, hand stitched Jacket.

| Even though we appreciate the "Goat worshipping" fun of some of the Black
metal Cohorts, We can really sink our teeth into the kind of religious
ceremonies that involved getting arse-holed and howling in a foreign
language. I mean, c'mon, how doesn't belong to that religion ? (Ok, maybe
Pat Robertson doesn't, but Charlemagne Palestine certainly does, as you'll see in the next review) So this record is from a buch of cassettes recorded in Columbia in the 70's of a Yage ceremony, which goes back to pre-history in the area, but still exits today. Unlike some culture vulture labels doing field recording or found sound releases, a portion of the proceeds for this release go to benefit people in the area too.

| Hard to describle this one, as any description makes it sound either less or
more stupid than it actualy is (or maybe both at the same time, if that's
possible). The facts: this was filmed behind a High school in Eugene, Oregon
around 1989, and in additon to the main characters signature form of groin
kick kung fu, features renditions of such standards as "Wanted dead or
alive" and "18 and life". There also is a litte breakdancing, some
motivational speaking, and other little nuggets of wisdom which will make
you wonder how you've made it so long on earth without. Some odd excerpts
from the 16 minute epic can be found on Youtube if you search "The Chevy Boys Song". |
