Waldteufel Sanguis
Compact Disc (CD) Beta-Lactam Ring
$18.99 Add To Cart <<< PRESENTLY OUT OF PRINT >>> <<< PLEASE DO NOT ORDER >>>> First ed. of 900 copies in a smoking hot full color book bound gatefold case and 8 page lyric booklet. After more than three years of research & development, WALDTEUFEL finally deliver their new opus: SANGUIS. First conceived as a 12”, it has since blossomed into a full-length album. SANGUIS features lyrics by two nearly forgotten German personalities – Stefan George & Alfred Schuler, who can be considered the two opposite poles of the ‘Cosmic Circle,’ a group of mystically inclined German authors that were active in Fin de Siecle Munich– as well as lyrical fragments from the ancient Indian Vedas. Musically, it runs the gamut from dense hypnotic atmospheres, ritual passages to metallic chants and triumphant percussion-heavy hymns. It is the most adventurous and varied WALDTEUFEL work so far, and expands and deepens the themes explored in the first album “Heimliches Deutschland.” |

Charlemagne Palestine A Sweet Quasimodo.....
Compact Disc (CD) Cold Blue Music
$16.99 Add To Cart as
indicated on the credits, the performance involves "Piano, Voice, and Brandy Snifter". This recording begins with a bit of conversation while Mr. Palestine
apparently gets in the right mindframe, and from there it's on to the
instrumentation, which is a bit of loose composition on the grand,
but the style of playing conjures a form of low frequency resonance with nuances that our both strangely formless and incidental sounding. As with many things so abstract in their underlying nature, one might say to the other, "Anyone can do that". but the other then more than likely be compelled to retort "Yeah, but can anyone else do it quite like that?"

J Dilla Ruff Draft
Compact Disc (CD) Stones Throw
$14.99 Add To Cart We where keeping a very close eye out when this was originally released, and
as it got by the likes of us, we expect that this release only received a tiny
amount of distribution even in Europe, much like the twelve inch "Fuck the Police" initially was only available in Japan in 2002. Of course, we are fond of
saying that Dilla's LP "welcome to Detroit" was a cultural turning point; the
moment when it was impossible for all the "conscious" Hip Hop fans and
artists to continue their reign of bigotry over what they called "Rap", and
as it was largely ignored at it's time of release (Much as the first two
Tribe called Quest records where) we expect Ruff Draft would be pretty easy to miss, even in broad daylight with a flashlight (to quote E-40).
Now, in the four years since "Welcome to Detroit" many things have changed
in both music and the perception and acclaim of Dilla, and surely in
addition to Ruff Draft many other recordings will be revived, ala Tu Pac.
Ruff Draft, to be quite honest, is really only an expansion of one 12" EP,
made into two discs of instrumentals and accapellas, and some other cool bonus stuff. It does have essential songs on it though, and great liner notes and pictures of Dilla driving some hurkin peice of detroit manufacturing.

$9.99 Add To Cart <<< PRESENTLY OUT OF PRINT >>> <<< PLEASE DO NOT ORDER >>>> The international face of Dubstep in portland has finally released a mix,
and as you might expect it is filled with dubplates that might never see the

structured, which ebbs and flows seemlessly between it's peaks and

a strong urge to listen to it at least once a day. Strange drug, this

although if you live in the area and look carefully you can probably find an
orginal, as one of the guys in the band apparently sold a ton of them to
local stores a few years ago for $10. The CD is a bump up from any previous
format though, due to it's high quality Japanese packaging, Remastering, and great liner notes that really set a tone and context for this rare artifact of late 70's Pacific Northwest folk.

Trans Am Sex Change

$14.99 Add To Cart Did not expect this record to start with a TB 303 acid line, but neither did we expect the illustration of them on purple horses in the booklet. This album has a lot of debate around it, to some it was a HUGE let down after their acclaimed debut Young Team and the singles collection Ten Rapid. And of course theres Smolkens tortured vocals that creep up every now and then. More on the folk side of the Dead Raven spectrum than the Metal/Noise side. Psychic Paramount Origins And Primitives Vol. 1 And 2
Compact Disc (CD) No Quarter
$17.99 Add To Cart Psychic Paramount played a rich mix of the more violent side of Floydian instrumentals and spacey drone, with an underbelly of hammering drum thud on their debut album Gamelan Into The Mink Supernatural. Undoubtedly one of the loudest albums released in 2005, it introduced the world to this mysterious three piece from New York City. Origins and Primitives is not the new studio album (expect that to arrive in spring '07) but rather documents the formation of the groups sound with a collection of home recordings that mines the collective unconscious. Far from the "in-the-red" sound of Gamelan, Origins and Primitives explores the quieter side of The Psychic Paramount with pulsing guitar tones, looped feedback and mellow electro acoustic compositions. The set draws directly on the automatic method of composition to emphasize first impressions all while hinting at the shape of monsters to come. 2 discs, and as it's on No Quarter - I'd recommend getting them while you can. |

Pavement Wowee Zowee : Sordid Sentinels Edition
Compact Disc (CD) Matador
$16.99 Add To Cart Originally released in April 1995, fresh off the success of "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain", the band recorded a deliberately chaotic and eclectic album that sounded nothing like its predecessor. With influences from the Groundhogs to the Frogs, Captain Beefheart to the more obscure mid-'80s central California hardcore bands, "Wowee Zowee" confused critics and alienated fans. Yet it became a fan favorite over time. The songs have a darkness that now seems appropriate and with Bryce Goggin at the mixing desk, the production was the band's most rocking to date. This super-deluxe re-mastered comp contains an embossed slipcase with two CDs and a 64-page perfect-bound book, fifty tracks total; eighteen unreleased recordings, nine non-album b-sides, four compilation tracks, five BBC Evening Session tracks and much more. |

More in the tradition of Nurse With Wound's Spiral Insana or Klaus Schulze's Cyborg than any contemporary trend, the tracks float along in a masterful collage of activity, where careful scene changes highlight O'Sullivan's classic but artfully placed Rhodes bombs, de Roguin's organ, and O'Malley's guitar. |

Tim Hecker Harmony In Ultraviolet
Compact Disc (CD) Kranky
$13.99 Add To Cart Harmony in Ultraviolet is Heckers sixth album. It is a continuation of his interest in spectral communications, noise, impressionist musics, thresholds of listening pleasure/pain, and the limits of digital composition. This album is a significant development of his song-craft, challenging the usefulness of descriptors such as ambient, drone, metal, noise and even electronic music. If references are necessary it could be described as a sonata for the elements, songs of crackling embers, tidal pools, spruce skylines and autumn winds. Materially speaking, it is a record of whirring drones, whispering fissures, dense disintegrating chords, late-night noise and truth-telling harmonics. |

White Magic Dat Rosa Mel Apibus
Compact Disc (CD) Drag City
$13.99 Add To Cart White Magic is the songwriting and vocal lyricism of Mira Billote (Quix*O*Tic) engaged by the talented likes of Doug Shaw, Jim White (Dirty Three), Tim Dewitt (Gang Gang Dance), Tim Barnes, Samara Lubelski, Shahzad Ismaily, Jesse Lee, Karen Leblanc, and Brad Traux. White Magics debut full length album Dat Rosa Mel Apibus is an elaborate evolution from the the groups first release. It is a journey which sets forth into an untamed musical landscape, finding the familiar in unusual streams of new sound--a new music. A music that knows the past, but does not repeat it. Torch songs ride into dark ragas and devotional dub with prophetic resonance. Influences of African and tropical guitar rise and reel through the harmony. The album is a movement of great proportion, exploring the emotional and the spiritual to unbounded and sublime depths. |

Various The World Is Gone
Compact Disc (CD) XL Recordings
$12.99 Add To Cart Hotly anticipated debut abum from the awkwardly named Various (no, this isn't a compilation...) who some of you will be familiar with through their limited edition singles which we've been selling over the past year or so, all featuring beautiful drawings on their sleeves, just like the ones that feature in the artwork for this release. Various make dubstep-inspired dark, paranoid, grainy, desolate, bleakly melancholic beat-driven tracks which sometimes incorporate sung vocals, and they also make ethereal, equally melancholic, acoustic folky tracks that sit side by side with their beat-y stuff surprisingly well. This is a consistantly excellent album that has wide appeal and deserves your attention! If you liked Massive Attack's Protection album (and if you didn't you 're part of a small minority!) then you will likely love this. |

Results range from the dreamy, bluesy "Cursed Sleep" and the evocation of a British madrigal on "No Bad News" to the discordant propulsion of "The Seedling" and the call and response of the folkish "Then the Letting Go." TV On The Radio Return To Cookie Mountain
Compact Disc (CD) Interscope
$12.99 Add To Cart Another great record by these guys, and its their major label debut. If youre not on the TVOTR train yet, they are one of the few high profile rock acts around right now that seem to prefer innovating over churning out radio fodder. It has its share of radio hits, but more importantly the rest of the album is great! Art-rock, grimy electro, great song writing, and lots reasonable genre jumping. Good stuff. The first album to even come close to Kip Malones masterpiece Pink Is The New Black, when he was the guitarist for Rocket Science And The N.L.F. |

Theyve stepped up the quality a bit, retained the ability to crank out pop-rock stroke/ramones riffs that dont sound like cardboard cut outs, stepped up the recording/production quality, and added a heavy political theme/narrative to the entire album. $13.99 Add To Cart Once the revisionist history effect kicks in in relation to the year

multitude of amazing records which where released by bands many had
written off. With all the up and downs the gossip mill has produced
pertaining to the once mighty EE, we can see why there is skepicism
about "Nightlife". However, as we see it this record perfectly fills
the vacum left due to The Gossip's shift in style and the demise of
the Coachwhips. Really excellent, dancy, melody driven rock from start

Wolf Eyes The Driller
Vinyl (LP) Sup Pop
$6.99 Add To Cart Limited edition preview 12 for their album dropping in September. Contains the album cut The Driller and the B-Side, exclusive to this 12, Psychogeist. Driller is a killer cut, furthering the blurring lines between black metal, harsh noise and doom metal. Sounding not unlike a DJ Screw remix of early Burzum. (note: these comments were made when playing at the labeled speed of 33 1/3 rpm. Later to find out by listening, its actually 45 rpm.oops it now sounds like a more typical, but still GREAT Wolf Eyes Harsh Riffing w/ Vocals cut!) The flip side is a slow burning murky drone piece that creeps along reminds me of being lost on a lake knowing that something there is going to kill you eventually you just dont know when. Really solid 12 from a band that some would say are a little too prolific and loose with their output. Recommended. |

Sufjan Stevens The Avalanche
Compact Disc (CD) Asthmatic Kitty
$14.99 Add To Cart The little secret behind the Illinois record is that it was originally conceived as a double album, culminating in a musical collage of nearly 50 songs. But as the project began to develop into an unwieldy epic, common sense weighed inas did the opinions of othersand the project was cut in half. But as 2005 came to a close, Sufjan returned to the old, forsaken songs on his 8-track. What he uncovered went beyond the merits of nostalgia. Among them were Saul Bellow, Ann Landers, Adlai Stevenson, and a brief cameo from Henry Darger's Vivian Girls. The gathering that followed would become the setting for the songs on The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extras from the Illinois Album. 21 tracks, new songs and 3 alternate takes of Chicago. |

Scott Walker Drift
Compact Disc (CD) 4AD
$14.99 Add To Cart Drift is here! Has it really been 11 years since Tilt!? Well the man is back! A breif history on Scott - He started off in a (fake) British Invasion band consisting of four (fake) brothers, called The Walker Brothers. After getting pretty huge they disbanded - Scott took off to study Gregorian Chant and then returned to record several albums of Jacques Brel songs - and later original material. In 1995 he recorded an album for London/Drag City titled "Tilt". It was as dark as anything you've ever heard. Ultra dark noir orchestral pop songs. Well it in fact has been 11 years now, and the DRIFT is finally here. To keep it simple - if you were a fan of Tilt, this thing will blow you away. A very similar aesthetic here, only way more intense - and production bells and whistles flying left and right. A huge huge record! Also available as Double Vinyl version. |

Elf Power Back to The Web
Compact Disc (CD) Ryko
$15.99 Add To Cart Man isnt it sad that silly critical and promotional
trends eclipse a great records chance of getting heard by the right people. Upon its release this record comes
with a silly sticker on it that suggests its heavy
psychedelic , melodic folk T-REX styled rock. I guess I realize thats kinda popular amongst folks in 2006, but this record aint anything like that. In fact that sales pitch robs the record of all the credit it deserves. Since 1995 ELF POWER have released 8 records and a slew of singles.
I gotta say after the 1st two this listener lost abit of interest. (Those covers albums stink) However, this record is really, really, really great. A return to the Elephant 6 alternapsychpop realm that initially birthed them. I guess the maestros of
backlash that churn the critical/promo trends are the same goons that invent terms like new wave, alternative and
indie rock only to use them as dirty words later. So Ill say this is a pretty bad psych - folk - stomping rock record but an incredible low key alternative - psych - klezmer - indie rock record.

Various A Tom Moulton Mix
Compact Disc (CD) Soul Jazz
$20.99 Add To Cart Continuing their succession of inspired compilations, Soul Jazz casts their mighty spotlight on one of the true geniuses of Disco, and music in general, Tom Moulton. In a time where remixes and edits have become a given within the genre of dance music, its hard to imagine a time when the concept just hadnt really been dreamt up. Tom Moultons first major contribution was the creation of the extended mix via a home reel to reel tape and oodles of tedium, which revolutionized the sound in the clubs during the early 1970s on Fire Island, New York. As one of the primary reasons for the non-existance of extended mixes prior to Moulton was the conception that the single track was the domain of the 7 45, Moulton eventually arrived and the advent of his second revolution: the 12 single, thus making it possible to cut the single much Hotter, a creation that has effected almost all forms of music to this day. Of course, this is but a paraphrasing of the whole story, but true to form Soul Jazz do an amazing job of fleshing out the whole story with the 20-odd page book that accopamies this 2 CD set. Once again, an important milestone, perfectly documented by Soul Jazz. |

The pleasant surprise is that although you can thank Bong Ra for it, this EP actually sit closer stylistically to the addict 7s Moonglow and Badminton than either the Full length it was sampled from or the bulk of Bong Ras material, with tends to be that of distorted Dancehall rhythms. This EP contains 4 gorgeous, lush downtempo tracks with nods to Jazz, Breakcore, and Gabber that speak volumes about the untapped potential of both the artists involved and the genre as a whole. Highly recommended. |

Shearing Pinx Work Ethic
Compact Disc (CD) Self Released
$6.99 Add To Cart Shearing Pinx dropped these by while on tour from Vancouver, BC. Limited CDR release on Isolated Now Waves. SP are a trio of guitar, voice/guitar, drums/noise. Noisy drum & guitar assaults that at times remind us a lot of early Black Dice, Arab On Radar, Magik Markers, Gang Gang Dance and other total spazz/noise punk groups as well as . The little noise/loop/collage bits between the tracks and the overall variance of recording quality from track to track actually really work well for this release, adding to its CDR charm. Recommended! |

Liars Drums Not Dead
Compact Disc (CD) Mute
$17.99 Add To Cart Wow. This is getting such poor reviews everywhere. We think this record is their greatest record to date. About a year ago the Liars picked up and moved from NYC to East Germany to record in a former radio facility. They had finished the record, and abandoned it, instead using it for the template that would eventually become Drums Not Dead. Well worth the wait, and quite a shocker! The steady hypnotic drums are definitely aplenty here. Great contrasting of ambience, drones, and anthemic percussive elements. A bizarre modern pop/kraut rock record. Fans of Can, This Heat, Faust, Animal Collective, and even Beck should check this out. The DVD contains 3 long videos from the album. |

Growing Color Wheel
Compact Disc (CD) Troubleman
$12.99 Add To Cart Yes! I have not really been a fan of Growing until recently, I really just wasnt into their first record. But these guys have been pretty consistent since record #2. On Color Wheel they develop even further, adding some serious compositional skills to their usually stagnant, but beautiful, drones. Its a little less heavy and maybe even a little less glacial than their previous records but what they remove from those departments they add interesting song structure and development. Fans of Sunn O))), Boris (esp. Flood), early Godspeed will dig. Highly recommended! |

Spank Rock Yo Yo Yo
Vinyl (LP) Big Dada
$17.99 Add To Cart Its good to know that at all times in recent history there is some pocket of the states that represents low presentation value, low class, dirty dance music. From Miami bass in the early 80s, to Ghetto House from the latter part of that decade to Ghetto Tech taking over in the late 90s the torch has been passed on to Baltimore, who have combined it all again and added a bit more rap for added measure. 12 tracks in all, featuring the singles Rick Rubin and Sweet Talk. |

Frontline Now U Know
Compact Disc (CD) Ryko
$16.99 Add To Cart Now that everyone in the industry is tripping over themselves trying to act like theve been into E40 and the whole Hyphy thing forever, we thought giving a word or two to the record that rocked Richmond last summer was due. Frontline, as previously mentioned, are from Richmond, which is positioned in a hilly area between Oakland and Vallejo, which is notoriously scary even by the standard of the bay. Frontline makes it clear though that they are not gangstas, and instead focus on the other tenets of west coast Rap: Bitches, money, and not getting your due, all the while keeping it in the club. |

Virus Syndicate Ready to Learn
Vinyl (LP) Planet Mu
$8.99 Add To Cart Finally, some new material from the crew that helped put Gunchester on the map, and features such luminaries as The Plasticman and Mark One. Ready to learn is actually the only totally new track on the 12, and plays out like a collision of Grime and early Kniteforce-esque Happy hardcore, with its sped up sample of chipmunk vocals. The funny thing is, as this 12 is cut at 45, it sounds as described above when played that speed, but if you play it at 33 (AKA the Chopped & Screwed speed) the sample sounds normal, but the MCs sound like they drank some robbatussin. Two songs for the price of one then, eh? |

Gromm/Endless Blizzard Split
Compact Disc (CD) Black Metal Rec
$14.99 Add To Cart Gromm hail from the Ukraine, and stylistically sit somewhere along the lines of a more guttural clandestine blaze. Endless Blizzard are from LA, although their drummer is from Estonia, which probably helps add to their street cred. They unleash six tracks of misanthropy akin to a more atmospheric Darkthrone. |

Procer Veneficus Ghost Voices
Compact Disc (CD) God Is Myth
$13.99 Add To Cart <<< PRESENTLY OUT OF PRINT >>> <<< PLEASE DO NOT ORDER >>>> There are not too many records well ever say this about, but here it is: This very well may be the quietest Black Metal record ever. Apparently, Procer Veneficus is a solo effort from northern California, and under the influence of a great deal of Velvet Cacoon created what is practically an homage to that style via acoustic guitar, atmospherics, and low volume, tortured vocals. Seven tracks of depressive bedtime music, all in all. |

Venom Metal Black
Compact Disc (CD) castle
$16.99 Add To Cart I guess when listening to this it is important to keep in mind that Venom may have invented the phrase Black Metal, but in reality, they are more akin to speed metal than the aforementioned genre. That aside, Metal Black continues the succession of releases by other artists of late that have arrived to our ears after an extended hiatus that are better than expected. Overall, metal black has a certain dirtiness that in tone reminds us of the French group Revenge, but still within the Venom Tradition of blazing traditional Metal. |

Lair of the Minotaur The Ultimate Destroyer
Compact Disc (CD) Southern Lord
$14.99 Add To Cart On their second album Lair Of The Minotaur are able to be extremely brutal while keeping an underlying groove. It's a skillful mix of thrash, death and doom that combines the best of each genre. The great thrash riffs are there, the brutality of death is on full display, and the dark mood of doom seeps through the whole thing. Lyrically they mix Greek mythology with the typical blood and gore of death metal. |

Nadja Truth Becomes Death
Compact Disc (CD) Alien8
$14.99 Add To Cart First official CD release for this Toronto based two piece.
This is a strange one, theyve added elements of shoegaze, death, and psych to their slow-metal. The shoegaze trip & swirl + immaculate drum machine programming works really well on this stuff. Overall a pretty impressive release in a recent tidal wave of stoner/doom records that are starting to sound a little too similar.
