Charlemagne Palestine A Sweet Quasimodo..... Compact Disc (CD) Cold Blue Music $16.99 Add To Cart as indicated on the credits, the performance involves "Piano, Voice, and Brandy Snifter". This recording begins with a bit of conversation while Mr. Palestine apparently gets in the right mindframe, and from there it's on to the instrumentation, which is a bit of loose composition on the grand, but the style of playing conjures a form of low frequency resonance with nuances that our both strangely formless and incidental sounding. As with many things so abstract in their underlying nature, one might say to the other, "Anyone can do that". but the other then more than likely be compelled to retort "Yeah, but can anyone else do it quite like that?"

J Dilla Ruff Draft Compact Disc (CD) Stones Throw $14.99 Add To Cart We where keeping a very close eye out when this was originally released, and as it got by the likes of us, we expect that this release only received a tiny amount of distribution even in Europe, much like the twelve inch "Fuck the Police" initially was only available in Japan in 2002. Of course, we are fond of saying that Dilla's LP "welcome to Detroit" was a cultural turning point; the moment when it was impossible for all the "conscious" Hip Hop fans and artists to continue their reign of bigotry over what they called "Rap", and as it was largely ignored at it's time of release (Much as the first two Tribe called Quest records where) we expect Ruff Draft would be pretty easy to miss, even in broad daylight with a flashlight (to quote E-40). Now, in the four years since "Welcome to Detroit" many things have changed in both music and the perception and acclaim of Dilla, and surely in addition to Ruff Draft many other recordings will be revived, ala Tu Pac. Ruff Draft, to be quite honest, is really only an expansion of one 12" EP, made into two discs of instrumentals and accapellas, and some other cool bonus stuff. It does have essential songs on it though, and great liner notes and pictures of Dilla driving some hurkin peice of detroit manufacturing.

Treepeople S/T Compact Disc (CD) Taliqua $17.99 Add To Cart The long lost classic Eugene folk record, available for the first time on CD via Japan's Tiliqua Records. They say they might do vinyl down the road as well, although if you live in the area and look carefully you can probably find an orginal, as one of the guys in the band apparently sold a ton of them to local stores a few years ago for $10. The CD is a bump up from any previous format though, due to it's high quality Japanese packaging, Remastering, and great liner notes that really set a tone and context for this rare artifact of late 70's Pacific Northwest folk.

The last Elysian Blaze release (Levitating the Carnal) had a very distinct sound, which was akin to Frankenstein making Xasthur out of body parts from Dick Dale. Right up there with Striborg as one of the bleakest things to Come from Australia (Besides Crocodile Dundee III, of course).

If you like both black metal and Manowar you may get a kick out of this.

Earth Hibernaclum Compact Disc (CD) Southern Lord $16.99 Add To Cart Earth, reviving some of their old standards in their western inspired style Du Jour, with really impressive results. That being said, it would have been funny had they called the record "Earth plays tunes and old standards the young people will enjoy". The DVD is a bit of a lark, but fun for it's momentary distraction.

Trans Am Sex Change Compact Disc (CD) Thrill Jockey $14.99 Add To Cart Did not expect this record to start with a TB 303 acid line, but neither did we expect the illustration of them on purple horses in the booklet. It is hard to say if Trans Am is attempting to introduce people to the Cosmic Disco sound, but if so, this is a pretty good showing of the moody, midtempo characteristics of that bygone genre as applied to a rock. Maybe it will do the same thing for Italo that Radiohead did for Electronic music, eh?

Although only a EP, what makes "People" special in a sense is the two versions of the title track, which is a perfect example of a LP version of one of their songs, along side the freaked out gi-normous jam version your would hear at one of their shows. As essential as the rest of their catalog.

Mogwai Come On Die Young Compact Disc (CD) Chemikal Underground $13.99 Add To Cart Re-issue of Mogwai�s 1999 sophmore full length. This album has a lot of debate around it, to some it was a HUGE let down after their acclaimed debut Young Team and the singles collection Ten Rapid. But many fans find it to be one their BEST, making use of subtlety � the album uses repetitive post-rock rhythms in long-form to construct each song. Then the songs all bleed together to make the album feel like one long track. It�s a tough one � I�ve been at different sides of the fence at different times with this one, but it�s nice to have it back in print finally.

Psychic Paramount Origins And Primitives Vol. 1 And 2 Compact Disc (CD) No Quarter $17.99 Add To Cart Psychic Paramount played a rich mix of the more violent side of Floydian instrumentals and spacey drone, with an underbelly of hammering drum thud on their debut album Gamelan Into The Mink Supernatural. Undoubtedly one of the loudest albums released in 2005, it introduced the world to this mysterious three piece from New York City. Origins and Primitives is not the new studio album (expect that to arrive in spring '07) but rather documents the formation of the groups sound with a collection of home recordings that mines the collective unconscious. Far from the "in-the-red" sound of Gamelan, Origins and Primitives explores the quieter side of The Psychic Paramount with pulsing guitar tones, looped feedback and mellow electro acoustic compositions. The set draws directly on the automatic method of composition to emphasize first impressions all while hinting at the shape of monsters to come. 2 discs, and as it's on No Quarter - I'd recommend getting them while you can.

Contains the album cut The Driller and the B-Side, exclusive to this 12�, Psychogeist. Driller is a killer cut, furthering the blurring lines between black metal, harsh noise and doom metal. Sounding not unlike a DJ Screw remix of early Burzum. (note: these comments were made when playing at the labeled speed of 33 1/3 rpm. Later to find out by listening, it�s actually 45 rpm�.oops � it now sounds like a more typical, but still GREAT Wolf Eyes Harsh Riffing w/ Vocals cut!) The flip side is a slow burning murky drone piece that creeps along � reminds me of being lost on a lake knowing that something there is going to kill you eventually � you just don�t know when. Really solid 12� from a band that some would say are a little too prolific and loose with their output. Recommended.

A breif history on Scott - He started off in a (fake) British Invasion band consisting of four (fake) brothers, called The Walker Brothers. After getting pretty huge they disbanded - Scott took off to study Gregorian Chant and then returned to record several albums of Jacques Brel songs - and later original material. In 1995 he recorded an album for London/Drag City titled "Tilt". It was as dark as anything you've ever heard. Ultra dark noir orchestral pop songs. Well it in fact has been 11 years now, and the DRIFT is finally here. To keep it simple - if you were a fan of Tilt, this thing will blow you away. A very similar aesthetic here, only way more intense - and production bells and whistles flying left and right. A huge huge record! Also available as Double Vinyl version.

His new project started off with Deerhoof as his backing band, but he didn�t stop there. He�s recruited an entire cast of indie all-stars to back him up. Backing up Daniel this time around we have Deerhoof, Sufjan Stevens, Why?, Sareenah Maneesh, and a ton of others. Fans of Flaming Lips, Neutral Milk, Grandaddy will be into this. Actually one of the strongest indie-pop records this year so far. Apparently the collaborations don�t stop here either, so keep your eyes peeled for a series of 7�s to follow this record. All containing future collaborations and the ones that just wouldn�t fit onto this release.

The disc documents a November 2005 performance from NYC's Knitting Factory. The set begins with an epic group arrangement of Jack Rose�s "Calais To Dover," with Rose's 12-string shadowed by Mike Gangloff's fiddle, and the thick drone of Mikel Dimmick and Pat Best's harmonium and shrutis. Upon it�s release this record comes with a silly sticker on it that suggests it�s �heavy psychedelic , melodic folk T-REX styled rock�. I guess I realize that�s kinda popular amongst folks in 2006, but this record ain�t anything like that. In fact that sales pitch robs the record of all the credit it deserves. Since 1995 ELF POWER have released 8 records and a slew of singles. I gotta say after the 1st two this listener lost abit of interest. (�Those covers albums stink�) However, this record is really, really, really great. A return to the Elephant 6 alternapsychpop realm that initially birthed them. I guess the maestros of backlash that churn the critical/promo trends are the same goons that invent terms like �new wave�, �alternative� and �indie rock� only to use them as dirty words later. So I�ll say this is a pretty bad psych - folk - stomping rock record but an incredible low key alternative - psych - klezmer - indie rock record.

Various A Tom Moulton Mix Compact Disc (CD) Soul Jazz $20.99 Add To Cart Continuing their succession of inspired compilations, Soul Jazz casts their mighty spotlight on one of the true geniuses of Disco, and music in general, Tom Moulton. In a time where remixes and edits have become a given within the genre of dance music, it�s hard to imagine a time when the concept just hadn�t really been dreamt up. Tom Moulton�s first major contribution was the creation of the extended mix via a home reel to reel tape and oodles of tedium, which revolutionized the sound in the clubs during the early 1970�s on Fire Island, New York. As one of the primary reasons for the non-existance of extended mixes prior to Moulton was the conception that the single track was the domain of the 7� 45, Moulton eventually arrived and the advent of his second revolution: the 12� single, thus making it possible to cut the single much �Hotter�, a creation that has effected almost all forms of music to this day. Of course, this is but a paraphrasing of the whole story, but true to form Soul Jazz do an amazing job of fleshing out the whole story with the 20-odd page book that accopamies this 2 CD set. Once again, an important milestone, perfectly documented by Soul Jazz.

Liars Drums Not Dead Compact Disc (CD) Mute $17.99 Add To Cart Wow. This is getting such poor reviews everywhere. We think this record is their greatest record to date. About a year ago the Liars picked up and moved from NYC to East Germany to record in a former radio facility. They had finished the record, and abandoned it, instead using it for the template that would eventually become �Drum�s Not Dead�. Well worth the wait, and quite a shocker! The steady hypnotic drums are definitely aplenty here. Great contrasting of ambience, drones, and anthemic percussive elements. A bizarre modern pop/kraut rock record. Fans of Can, This Heat, Faust, Animal Collective, and even Beck should check this out. The DVD contains 3 long videos from the album.

Frontline, as previously mentioned, are from Richmond, which is positioned in a hilly area between Oakland and Vallejo, which is notoriously scary even by the standard of the bay. Frontline makes it clear though that they are not gangstas, and instead focus on the other tenets of west coast Rap: Bitches, money, and not getting your due, all the while keeping it in the club.

Virus Syndicate Ready to Learn Vinyl (LP) Planet Mu $8.99 Add To Cart Finally, some new material from the crew that helped put �Gunchester� on the map, and features such luminaries as The Plasticman and Mark One. �Ready to learn� is actually the only totally new track on the 12�, and plays out like a collision of Grime and early Kniteforce-esque Happy hardcore, with its sped up sample of chipmunk vocals. The funny thing is, as this 12� is cut at 45, it sounds as described above when played that speed, but if you play it at 33 (AKA the �Chopped & Screwed� speed) the sample sounds normal, but the MC�s sound like they drank some robbatussin. Two songs for the price of one then, eh?

Venom Metal Black Compact Disc (CD) castle $16.99 Add To Cart I guess when listening to this it is important to keep in mind that Venom may have invented the phrase �Black Metal�, but in reality, they are more akin to speed metal than the aforementioned genre. That aside, Metal Black continues the succession of releases by other artists of late that have arrived to our ears after an extended hiatus that are better than expected. Overall, metal black has a certain dirtiness that in tone reminds us of the French group Revenge, but still within the Venom Tradition of blazing traditional Metal.

It's a skillful mix of thrash, death and doom that combines the best of each genre. The great thrash riffs are there, the brutality of death is on full display, and the dark mood of doom seeps through the whole thing. Lyrically they mix Greek mythology with the typical blood and gore of death metal.

This is a strange one, they�ve added elements of shoegaze, death, and psych to their slow-metal. The shoegaze trip & swirl + immaculate drum machine programming works really well on this stuff. Overall a pretty impressive release in a recent tidal wave of stoner/doom records that are starting to sound a little too similar.
